The 3 reasons to have your wedding ceremony in Crete
This article will highlight the 3 most important reasons that make you choose Crete as your preferred wedding location.
Reason #1 Crete beaches make fabulous wedding locations
The beaches in Crete make fabulous wedding locations. With a coastline of 1046 kilometres, there’s so much to choose from. It will be hard to find any other Island in Europe that offers so many beach wedding locations. Most favourable, are the sandy beaches in the Northern part of Crete. Do you prefer rough and unaffected beaches, then the Southern part of Crete would be your choice.
One beach that clearly sticks out is; Elafonissi beach in the southwesternmost tip of Crete. Elafonissi is a Natura 2000 protected area. Many visitors prescribe the beach as an “exotic beach with white sand and turquoise water” The sand is pinkish in many places, taking its colour from the crushed shells.
Elafonissi was ranked among the 14 best beaches in the world and the second-best in Europe for 2016, according to the Travellers’ Choice Awards — the largest travel platform in the world, TripAdvisor.
Most of the Northern beaches are easily accessible and in most cases also by large coaches to bring family and friends to your wedding location.
Reason #2 Crete offers all year round wonderfull weather
Even in wintertime, you can have your wedding in Crete. Please read my blog about the “weather and wedding conditions in Crete” about the possibilities of getting married in Crete all year round.
Now we covered the weather, there’s another important part of your wedding, the costs. A major benefit of having your wedding ceremony in wintertime, or early spring and late autumn, are the cost of your wedding. Crete is a very popular tourist Island, we all know that. High season means “high costs”. You can really negotiate good prices if you plan your wedding in early spring or late autumn. Not only for your accommodation but also the wedding location and the catering.
Charter flights within Europe to Crete start in early April to both airports (Chania and Heraklion). The last charter flights from Crete are at the end of October. In wintertime, all flights to Crete are from Athens. Eagan offers daily multiple flights from out of Athens to Crete.
Reason #3 Both your wedding ceremony and honeymoon in Crete
It’s all here, in Crete! Your wedding location and all the ingredients for a perfect honeymoon. Basically, there are three ways to do it;
- be bold and arrange it all yourself. A large cost saver and you are in full control. Please read the blog I wrote specifically about this topic “can I organise my own wedding?”
- use a professional wedding planner and let them organise the whole wedding (preferable)
- book an all-inclusive that has a wedding package included.
But these (wedding) locations need a word of caution for your wedding. Please find more information about this possibility in my blog article. “why choose a wedding celebrant”
In conclusion
There’s much more than I can possibly write down. If you plan to have your wedding in a romantic place then consider Crete. Experience the Greek hospitality yourself, the delicious food and the wonderful places you can visit during your stay.
After your wedding ceremony, you and your family can start exploring Crete. Are you the sportive type? Okay, then there are many gorges to explore. The most famous one is the Samaria gorge in Western Crete.
Or are you interested in the Greek agent history? Then a visit to the Knossos near Heraklion is the place to go. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and has been called Europe’s oldest city.
I can go on and on, but the main reason for getting married in Crete is because it’s the most beautiful part of Europe and affordable for your wedding abroad.
